Check Mate
a brief history & how-to in styling the good gingham, spring into summer
Gingham has a nostalgic omnipresence. It’s the hallmark tablecloth at your favorite burger spot, the lining of an easter basket, the checked shirt your mom tried tirelessly to get your little brother into for a special occasion, the cool capri your grandmother wore each summer season, and Dorothy in her red slippers.

However familiar these things may be, the print itself was born in India in the late 1600s. While textile historians debate its true origins, it became an integral part of the Dutch textile trade in the 1700s, which led to its eventual mass production by the English in the mills of Manchester in the latter half of the 18th century.1 All to say — the print is not a product of the modern fashion industry, nor was it dreamt up by the costume designers of The Wizard of Oz.
Now that we’ve recognized why we’re drawn to it, and traced its roots, we can properly appreciate the greats:

This season, the beloved check is everywhere. And so, to keep you from feeling like your brother or grandmother—though I’m sure they’re both lovely and, God willing, chic—we’ll need to freshen things up a bit. Cue the jewel tones!

Deep reds, crisp blues, terracotta browns, and soft corals breathe new life into the classic check. It’s the epitome of a cool combo—so do try this at home, and skate through some fab finds below…
